Pocket Cyber Café is an innovative project of the VisionNet, which is a leading broadband satellite communication services provider in Congo. The company provides the services to business organizations, public administrations, and consumer end users. With their headquarters located in Bunia, VisionNet has commercial subsidiaries in multiple Congolese cities.
The satellite networks of VisionNet are connected to some of the leading service providers with the help of fibre optics and connectivity is provided through the DRCongo and Africa.
In the past, we were providing the internet connection only to the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) but we realized a much bigger problem. One of our recent market surveys revealed that universities in Congo are severely lacking in reliable and affordable internet connections. The survey required students to answer questions about common problems they face when it comes to conducting online research. 95% mentioned feasible internet access was a major issue. In order to meet this demand in the educational sector, we began this project and improve internet issues for ambitious students.
In the US, universities have created Wi-Fi Zones for the convenience of their students. These are areas with a radius within which Wi-Fi is available at a low cost as compared to mobile network providers. Similarly, Pocket Cyber Café creates these Wi-Fi zones in universities in Congo. Students with mobiles and laptops compatible with Wi-Fi connectivity can easily access affordable internet within the zones. With the help of this project, we will be supporting 120 students per day and 80,640 in 2 years.
